who am i

I'm Antonia Beil - but everyone calls me Toni, which is much less of a mouthful. I'm twenty years old, and I grew up all over the place: Egypt, Cyprus, Berlin, and a handful of small German cities. I speak English, German, and French properly, and then there's a whole mess of Spanish, Turkish, Arabic, and Greek floating around my brain at an intermediate level - the natural side effect of never really staying in one place long enough... But I love to travel, so that's a bonus of that.

I make short films, write, draw, take photos, edit obsessively - basically anything that involves image, sound, or words, I'm there. My work is weird rather than dark, experimental rather than polished. I care a lot about the absurd, about strangeness, about the feeling you get from something that doesn't behave how you expect it to. I did the IB, which has its own particular ideas about what filmmaking should look like, but my personal work goes wherever it wants. I'm currently a freelance script researcher for a true crime YouTube channel - digging into cases, building timelines, writing scripts - and I'm also writing a book for a company (NDA, so that's all you're getting). I'm building this portfolio to apply to MetFilm School and Film University Berlin. I have a black cat named Countess Dibbles who is, objectively, the best thing in my life.

inspirations

French New Wave - Godard, Truffaut, Varda
German Expressionism
Twin Peaks and David Lynch's whole brain
Greta Gerwig. John Waters. Ari Aster.
Ethel Cain's approach to storytelling, which absolutely destroys me
Lady Gaga and Taylor Swift - the obsession, the craft, the reinvention. Every era as a complete world.
PJ Harvey. Florence Welch. Hayley Williams.
Characters who haunt the narrative long after the story's over - Jackie Taylor, Laura Palmer, that whole lineage
Albert Camus and the absurd, which is pretentious but it's popular for a reason
Aubrey Plaza's quote that weirdos rule the world, which is basically my entire manifesto

artistic process

filmmaking - directing actors, designing lighting setups, filming on-location with strong command of framing, exposure and movement.

editing - Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, DaVinci Resolve. Creating and integrating original animations into live-action footage.

music - self-composing and producing original soundtracks. DAWs include Ableton, Logic Pro, FL Studio, GarageBand and more.

art - illustration and drawing with a strong gothic/punk aesthetic, supporting storyboarding and set design.
